The 49ers Monday signed five-time Pro-Bowler Elvis Dumervil to help the pass rush and give the defensive front another veteran to potentially start. San Francisco’s new 4-3 defense calls for more traditional defensive end-types along the edges. The 49ers this offseason have tried a blend of former outside linebackers in their 3-4 and 2015 first-round pick Arik Armstead, traditionally an interior lineman, at LEO lining up on the weak side. Dumervil gives John Lynch and new coordinator …

The good and not so good from 49ers OTAs: Week 1

, , , ,

1 SANTA CLARA Here’s what stood out to me Tuesday. THE GOOD 1. QB Brian Hoyer. I haven’t seen a 49ers quarterback play this well during practice since Alex Smith was on the team. Hoyer was in total command of the offense, made quick decisions in the pocket and completed 13-of-15 passes during team drills. Both of his incomplete passes were long throws intended for Marquise Goodwin, who stopped running during one play because he seemed to injure his hamstring. More on Goodwin below. Hoyer …

,

The roster cuts are going to come fast and furious after the final preseason game. The NFL owners are meeting this week, and on Tuesday, they voted to make a change to roster cuts during training camp. In previous years, teams would cut from 90 players to 75 players after the third preseason game, and then cut from 75 players to 53 players after the fourth preseason game. Albert Breer is reporting the league has removed the first cut to 75 players. This is going to provide players at …

Key takeaways from The MMQB piece inside 49ers war room for NFL draft

… round knowing a the trade to move back from No. 2 to 3 was in place with Chicago. There was confusion at the time whether the Bears were in a bidding war with other teams to move up to the second pick, driving up the price. If there was, it happened in the days before the draft, not that Friday of the first round. San Francisco took Chicago’s offer of two third-round picks (one in 2018) and a fourth-round pick to go back one spot. They still landed the player they wanted in Stanford …

The good and not so good from 49ers rookie minicamp

SANTA CLARA Here are the highlights from the 49ers rookie minicamp. SHANAHAN WATCH Last week, Kyle Shanahan spent most of the voluntary minicamp working with wide receivers and tight ends on route-running. He looked like the passing game coordinator. Today, he looked like the quarterback coach. More specifically, he looked like C.J. Beathard’s personal tutor. Shanahan watched Beathard during every drill. When the rest of the team practiced special teams, Shanahan worked with Beathard on a …

The good and not so good from the 49ers first practice with Kyle Shanahan

1 SANTA CLARA The 49ers held their first practice of the offseason in front of the media Wednesday afternoon. Before I get into the good and not so good from the players, I want to start with the good and not so good from the head coach – Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan is an interactive coach, like Jim Harbaugh. This is good. During position drills, Shanahan stands in the middle of the action like a defender – the only one on the field. Sometimes he actually plays cornerback and tries to take away …

Golden Nuggets: 49ers move on from Tramaine Brock after arrest

, , , ,

Sunday, April 9th, 2017 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from around the Internet. Good morning folks. The San Francisco 49ers released cornerback Tramaine Brock, not long after I took a look at the cornerback position itself … and I don’t think it’s going to matter much. Brock was in line to start in 2017, for sure, but it was definitely time to shift him out and give the younger guys a chance to sink or swim. Brock, though, …
